According to the government in Ottawa, the deal is the “new standard of excellence for trade agreements in the 21st century”, and the view of the European Commission is that “it will benefit individuals and big and small businesses”. For activists on both sides of the Atlantic as well as commentators such as Great Britain’s George Monbiot, it poses a threat to parliamentary democracy and to the “laws that protect us from exploitation”.
