18 hard months

A happy ending is anything but certain. It’ll require that Theresa May is willing and able to confront the UK’s “Hard Brexiteers” to accept the inevitable compromises she’ll have to make.

Following British Prime Minister Theresa May’s triggering of Article 50 in late March, preparations in Brussels and London are now under way for what are destined to become difficult negotiations, ultimately leading to an unhappy divorce between the United Kingdom and the remaining 27 members of the EU. During the next 18 months or so, negotiations will first cover the divorce settlement and then the framework of future relations as well as some sort of transition agreement to guide relations between the two sides during the up to ten years of trade negotiations that will follow. The agreements for these three areas will then have to be ratified within the remaining six months of the two years allotted in Article 50 before the UK actually leaves the EU.
