2017: a European space odyssey

After Brexit, even the Netherlands, France and Germany could opt for national sovereignty and spell the end of the EU. Fantasy politics? Perhaps.

When polling stations closed on the evening of 24 September 2017 in Germany, the first person to offer her congratulations was French President Marine Le Pen. She sent an enthusiastic telegram to Frauke Petry, the young leader of Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), the populist party that had managed the unthinkable by becoming the largest political party in Germany with 26% of the vote.
