When will the collective consciousness wake up to the thousands of people trying to reach the European coast? 

The numbers prove that migration levels today have become a phenomenon of historic import. In 2009, 9,753 migrants disembarked on Italian shores; in 2013, the figure had jumped to 42,925. By 2014, it had risen to 170,100. And according to the Italian Ministry of Interior, 32,236 immigrants have arrived in the first five months of 2015.

The media often tend to generalise when discussing migration, which actually has innumerable facets. There are approximately five million foreign residents in Italy, from 200 countries, with legally obtained permits to work, study or join their families in the country. Then there are the asylum-seeking migrants. According to mid- 2014 data from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), there are 76,000 officially recognised refugees in Italy compared to 237,000 in France, 126,000 in the United Kingdom and 200,000 in Germany. Therefore, on average Italy accepts one refugee for every thousand inhabitants.
