In this stunning strip of land that joins the eastern and southern regions of the African continent, the planets are out of kilter. A serious economic crisis is now being matched by a very complex political outlook, two elements that together are likely to trigger a new social crisis.
Mozambique has a vast wealth of natural, human, mineral, energy and agricultural resources at its disposal as well as a potentially flourishing tourist trade. And until a year ago, the country’s name was being directly associated with what is claimed to be the most important discovery of natural gas deposits on the planet. The announcement of this discovery thrust Mozambique into the inter- national limelight, but it has also re- vealed the many fractures that exist within the country. As fate would have it, the new energy resources (discovered by the Italian group ENI and the American company Anadarko) happen to be located in the northern reaches of Mozambique, close to the border with Tanzania.
