The attacks began with the assassination of a Hindu leader by Maoist warriors.  Within a few days 37 persons, mostly Christians, lost their lives. This was followed by arson and devastation, 150 churches burned and schools and housing razed to the ground, resulting in an exodus of 50,000 refugees.
