A threat to Europe

Security during the Extraordinary Jubilee is guaranteed by alert secret services and police forces. But is Rome an IS target?

The attacks carried out by Islamic State (IS) terrorists in Paris on the evening of 13 November and security challenges concerning the forthcoming jubilee year in Italy have reopened the debate on Europe’s ability to tackle the jihadi threat.

Countries in the EU have a long history of battling terrorism, both from domestic organizations of a separatist or ideological hue and external groups, originally those from Libya or Palestine, followed by those under the banner of al-Qaeda and more recently IS.

The latter group, which came to prominence following the proclamation of the caliphate across a swathe of territory from Syria to Iraq in July 2014, boasts a structure that has enabled it to absorb the diverse factions formerly aligned with al-Qaeda.
