The negotiations in January went well: Anastasiades and Akinci trust in a reunification that must be granted the utmost support by the international community. After a half-century of division, a symbolic handshake marking a commitment to the reunification of Cyprus took place at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January with the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban – moon, presiding. The protagonists of this historic moment were the representatives of the island’s two ethnic communities, Nicos Anastasiades, president of the Republic of Cyprus (representing the Greek-Cypriots, 82% of the population) and Mustafa Akinci, president of Northern Cyprus and its Turkish-Cypriot community (18%).

For Anastasiades, the conditions are in place to reach a solution by the end of the year as long as all of the chapters of the negotiations are agreed “in a manner that is clear and satisfactory for all”. Akinci, meanwhile, understands that they face “probably the last chance to reunify the island and one we can’t afford to waste”.
