Since time immemorial, ancient Persia has encapsulated the idea of a cultural melting pot of history and tradition. The birthplace of one of the world’s oldest civilisations that dates back to 2800 B.C., Iran’s multicultural dimension has been strongly influenced by the Silk Road and its roaring trade in goods over the centuries. Its varied cultural heritage bears witness to the country’s many facets as it passed through different historical periods and civilisations until modern times. This is, perhaps, the most difficult period to assess, as it is usually identified with the anathema of the ayatollahs and the fundamentalism of its former president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejād.
