MOBILE – Roaming tariffs drop lower and will soon be eliminated.
Since May, new roaming tariffs have come into force with average price drops of 75%. Users will pay a supplement of €.05 per minute for their calls (instead of €.19), €.02 for each SMS sent (instead of €.06) and €.05 per megabyte instead of €.20. Roaming costs, which represented income to the tune of €4 billion a year for mobile telephone companies, will be completely abolished by June 2017. The abolition is the outcome of a long battle between the European Commission and national governments which ended with a ratified agreement in June 2015. According to analysts, operators will make up the lost revenue thanks to the increase in voice and data traffic.
