Timmermans introduces downsizing reforms package - On 19 May, the first vice-president of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, presented the Better Regulation plan, a package of reforms aimed at simplifying and streamlining the prodigious European executive legislative process.

There will also be a new, seven-member committee, which includes three experts from outside the Commission, whose job it will be to assess the impact of new laws as well as the costs and adequacy of existing laws. All new measures will have to be green-lit by the committee before being submitted for evaluation by the EU commissioners. Lastly, the Commission will strengthen the Regulatory Fitness and Performance programme (REFIT), which continuously evaluates existing legislation to make it more effective and efficient.
