Sweden and Denmark suspend Schengen

Following Germany, Austria, Norway and France, Sweden and Denmark have now also resumed border controls. On 3 January, Stockholm introduced passport checks for people from Denmark, ostensibly in order to limit the uncontrolled influx of refugees. At the same time, Denmark reinforced border checks along its German border.

According to Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter, if the feared “domino effect” does not materialise and the Schengen free circulation area survives, the 28 member countries will be “finally forced to implement the redistribution mechanism that was suggested by the European Commission and adopted in the autumn of 2015”.
