ORIGINS =Compulsory labelling for Israeli settlement products
On 11 November, the European Commission published its guidelines on the labelling of products from occupied Palestinian territories. From now on, wine, fruit, vegetables and cosmetics produced in occupied West Bank territories must bear the inscription “product from ... Israeli settlement”, or words to that effect, an EUobserver article explains.

For other products made in the colonies, such as prepared foods and most industrially manufactured goods, the labelling will be optional, but producers will have to avoid ambiguous labels such as “Made in Israel”. EU member states are required to sanction manufacturers who do not comply with the new regulations, and the Commission can initiate violation procedures against countries that fail to do so.
