Challenges on every front

Security, the economy, politics. Egypt seems to be slipping out of General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s grasp and only 26% of those entitled recently went to vote.

Egypt has experienced a turbulent autumn. In September, ten Mexican tourists were mistaken for terrorists and were accidentally killed by security forces. At the end of October, a plane with Russian tourists crashed in Sinai, most likely due to a bomb, leaving no survivors.

Meanwhile, parliamentary elections have been held, the final step of the roadmap outlined by General-turned- President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi following the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.

In terms of the economy, Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) Governor Hisham Ramez was replaced by Tarek Amer in October. The replacement came as Egypt faces a problematic shortage of foreign currency and increasing pressure on its own currency, the Egyptian pound, on currency exchange markets.
