Comrade capitalism

For the West it’s a danger, a threat and an enigma. Its small private economy guarantees the country’s survival.

North Korea is arguably one of the world’s most longlasting Cold War hangovers. A source of political uncertainty that is both fodder for tabloid amusement and a source of regional instability. One thing is certain, however. The North Korean problem is not going away. Despite a massive famine, a brutally oppressive regime and crippling international isolation, North Korea is surviving well into the 21st century, seemingly immune to outside pressure and decades-old predictions of its failure or collapse.
