The country may be suffering under the economic crisis but it can still rely on its ‘blue gold’. Last year, Greece’s sea, beaches, archaeological sites and cuisine earned €13.4 billion for the country’s threadbare coffers, thanks to 24 million tourists, 20.7% more than in 2013. tourist statistics for 2014 from the Bank of Greece showed 2.46 million visitors from Germany (+8.5% more than the previous year), 2.09 million from Britain (+13.2%), 1.46 million from France (+27%) and 592,000 from the Us (+26.9%).
The number of eastern european visitors also increased, though these visitors on average spent less and stayed fewer days. Only Russia, owing to the rouble crisis, posted a fall in visitor numbers in 2014 with 1.25 million visitors (down 7.6% from 2013).
