If Western values have enriched local societies, making them prosperous and democratic, it’s our duty to ensure that efforts in the same direction made by Arab populations receive the fullest support. The events in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya are likely to have different outcomes because Tunis is as much like Yemen as Greece is like Norway. In some places democracy will work. In others, such as Libya, civil strife will prevail.Some nations will adopt reforms while others will remain static. But if the Tahrir Square revolt ushers in free presidential elections in Egypt next year, making it the first Arab state to ever hold them, the shock waves will be felt the world round.
