Uzbekistan: Made-in-Karimov

In the heart of Central Asia, landlocked Uzbekistan is a nation whose sprawling lands once saw the reign of warriors such as Genghis Khan and Tamerlane. Under the dictatorial control Islam Karimov since the collapse of the Soviet empire in 1991, the strategically vital state is rich in natural resources but still desperately poor, producing a wealth of very visible contradictions.
