Egypt’sCopts Walk a Tightrope
Coptic Christians in Egypt have long been at the mercy of the country's majority Muslim community. Tensions flared again in January following a drive-by massacre in an upper Egyptian town near Luxor. While Coptic officials downplayed the attack, saying it fit a known pattern of abuse that they have grown to know, the recent massacre nonetheless elicited doubts about Egypt’s commitment to religious tolerance and stirred debate regarding the future of the Middle East’smost important secular nation.
