Into the Heart of Mumbai’s Slums
Mumbai’s teeming slums are part of its landscape. Half of Greater Mumbai’s population of 20 million resides in one of the city’s many shantytowns. At the same time, slum workers are fundamental to fueling the city’s booming economy, which has gradually risen to world-class dimensions. Journeying into the heart of the slum world reveals abject poverty, but also a powerful code of ethics. Residents must bid for a slum dwelling and hope a committee of elders approves them. It’s a society unto itself.
