The Land-Grabbers of the 21st Century

Nations hard up for food resources are increasingly leasing or purchasing large tracts of African land to meet their domestic crop needs. Fertile Ethiopia has become a hub for the practice, with Indian, Chinese, and Saudi interests taking advantage of low land prices. At the same time, more than two thirds of Ethiopia’s population of 80 million is povertystricken. Though both the World Bank and the UN have denounced the dubious ethics of so-called land grabbing, the lucrative practice appears destined to grow.
