United against a common enemy
The threat posed by the Sunni caliphate makes the 30-year danger posed by the Hezbollah Shiite faction and Iran pale into insignificance in the eyes of the US.
For over 30 years, Iran and Hezbollah have represented an indestructible brotherhood in the Middle East: united by their shared faith in Shia Islam, allied in fighting a common enemy, Israel, and bound by strong economic ties. Since 1982, when the ‘Party of Allah’ was established in Lebanon under the protective wing of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard at the height of the civil war (1975 to 1990), Hezbollah and Iran have shared a common pathway.
This has been further testified by recent, partly unexpected decisions taken by Western powers. In a surprise move, as of April, Iran and Hezbollah are no longer considered a terrorist threat to the US. Both have been removed from the list of countries and organisations that threaten the security of American interests. The news was presented to the US Senate in the National Intelligence service’s annual report, Worldwide Threat Assessment of the US Intelligence Community.
