EU: hits and myths
Approximately 2% of the world's refugees go to Europe

FALSE - The figure cited by Guy Verhofstadt, the leader of the European liberals, aims to put fears about mass migration in perspective and emphasise how much more can be done to welcome refugees. According to 2014 figures from the UN’s Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the EU took in just over one million people, amounting to approximately 8% of the world's refugees. Thus the EU welcomes four times more refugees than Verhofstadt’s stated figure. Even so, the actual percentage is relatively low when compared to individual countries like Pakistan (12% of the world’s refugees), Lebanon (9%), Iran (7.5%) or Turkey (6%). But what are the countries of origin of refugees entering the EU?
