The election of Donald Trump as president of the United States was in many ways a revolutionary choice that brought the American electorate’s disenchantment with its political establishment out into the open in a very brutal manner. It was totally unexpected. 

The political platform favoured by the newly elected president was as unpre- dictable as it was unusual, essentially re- volving around the promise to restore the United States to the splendour and prestige of a bygone era in which no one thought that it might be a waning superpower and everyone expected the US to exercise long- term imperial domination over the world without any relevant opposition.
