In theory the Netherlands should have nothing to fear with regard to the future. They are ranked ninth in the Global Innovation In- dex, and fifth in the Global Competi- tiveness Index. This year, based on IMF forecasts, their GDP should grow by 1.6% and unemployment stand at around 7%. Yet, in this flat and highly populated corner of the planet, where trains are powered by electricity pro- duced by wind farms and hi-tech start-ups are sprouting up by the dozen, discontent and worry are also on the rise.
