NASA has been making noises about colonising Mars for years, an objective reaffirmed in Oc- tober by former US President Barack Obama. But Elon Musk, founder of the private space company SpaceX, has been the one really making headlines. At a keenly attended presentation, Musk an- nounced the construction of a space ship in which he plans to transport a million peo- ple to the red planet by 2060 to create the first self-sufficient colony.
