The battle of Alleppo in the summer and autumn of 2016 was a major watershed in the process of re- drawing the balance of power in the Syrian conflict. This reconfiguration not only concerns the two main rival camps engaged in the conflict – the Bashar al- Assad regime and the armed opposition – but also internal relations within the oppo- sition forces themselves, especially among the Salafi and jihadi groups.
