In the aftermath of World War II in the USSR, a number of political essays as well as literary and poetic compositions began circulating. These texts were produced and distributed within a circuit that existed parallel to the official channels. They used to call it the samizdat. It was a form of self-production and self-distribution of texts that would have otherwise been caught up in the web of Soviet censorship. These publications circulated in single copies, reproduced using carbon paper, and printed secretly on professional printing presses. From one reader to the next, the texts reached the intellectual elite and thus in a very spontaneous fashion enabled the dissemination of ideas which were not otherwise tolerated.
