It’s also becoming one of the most important financial and technological hubs of the whole of Africa. Stella clavisque Maris Indici (star and key of the Indian Ocean) – that is the Latin motto of Mauritius, an island republic aspiring to be the Singapore of the 21st century. Lying about 900km (550 miles) off the coast of Madagascar, geographers regard Mauritius as the easternmost point of the African continent. It boasts an average GDP growth rate of greater than 3%, and its population is multi-ethnic, multilingual and multi-confessional: a tropical melting pot of 1.4 million souls, where the African element mingles with the (predominant) Indian, Malaysian, Chinese and European components to generate one of the most dynamic societies in the Indian Ocean.
