Nigeria: the real giant of the African continent. With a population of approximately 190 million people (nearly 50% of Western Africa and 15% of the whole continent), it is not only Africa’s most populous state, over the past few years it has also become the continent’s economic driving force. More precisely, Nigeria has become the largest economy in Africa in terms of gross domestic product (GDP). According to the most recent “official” data published by the World Bank, Nigerian GDP was worth $486.7 billion (€434.3) in 2015 against the $314.5 billion (€280.6bn) generated by the South African economy. Taken together, the two countries alone account for 60% of Africa’s GDP.
