During the press briefing to prepare for president Trump’s first foreign trip, which begin in Saudi Arabia and concluded in Taormina, Sicily with the G7 summit, national security adviser H.R. McMaster chose to highlight one theme in particular: “America First does not mean America alone. Our goal is to demonstrate that putting American interests at the top of the agenda does not mean alienating our allies, but working with them to achieve these goals and generate advantages for everyone”. In response to the anxieties of those who have seen Trump’s inclination towards strong authoritarian leaders in the overtures made to Putin, Xi, al Sisi and even Kim Jong-un, McMaster added that the pragmatic approach preferred by the White House would not contradict Washington’s traditional democratic values. If the president is to succeed in effecting the transformative change that he apparently desires, this is the key challenge that the new administration must overcome regarding international policy.
