You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone, as the saying goes. And that’s exactly what European citizens living in the UK and British citizens living elsewhere in Europe are currently experiencing. After Britain’s referendum vote in favour of withdrawing from the European Union, their rights are being called into question.

Last year, in the distorted debate that preceded the Brexit vote, nobody talked about the rights conferred by European citizenship. “Don’t worry, nothing is going to change for you”, everyone kept repeating to the expats on both sides of the Channel.
