On 24 September, Germany will go to the polls to elect a new Bundestag. It is a virtual given that Angela Merkel will secure a fourth term as chancellor, although probably with a new and smaller coalition partner. Regardless of the exact composition of the next German government, Chancellor Merkel will waste no time responding to French president Emmanuel Macron’s call for an ambitious European reform agenda to stimulate growth and to complete the euro area’s governance structure.
