China, the greatest polluter in the world, now leads the fight against climate change. Its reputation is at stake.

China is testing out a new role, ironically enough one championed by the United States in 2005 when Robert Zoellick, then deputy secretary of state, singled out efforts to reduce greenhouse gases and spread technologies designed to slow climate change as being fields in which China could prove itself to be a responsible player on the international stage.
