‘‘Queremos votar” – “We want to vote”. This was the slogan chanted by voters who attended the over 2,300 polling stations set up by the Catalan government on 1 October, the day of the Catalonian referendum on independence. That two-word slogan has brought on the worst institutional crisis in Spain since the days of the reintroduction of democracy to the country.
