Brazil has a “tendency to seek authoritarianism”. That might sound like a wisecrack uttered by one of the many populist leaders thriving in Latin America, but it was actually a statement made by the Brazilian president, Michel Temer. He made this claim during the solemn celebrations on 15 November, dedicated to the proclamation of the Republic. His words represent an unmistakable warning of what might happen in the country in the coming months.
