The new arms race
The US’ new nuclear policy makes no mention of deterrence. The nuclear arsenal is no longer a preventative tool and “no first use” is a nostalgic concept of the past.

The second year of the Trump era began with a shift in nuclear policy. Eight years after the last Nuclear Posture Review, we are witnessing a clear shift in America’s security policy. The American armed forces have now come to rely on nuclear power, which under the current president has taken on a role that goes well beyond the concept of deterrence and risks pitching the world back into a new arms race. The 2018 Nuclear Posture Review lies somewhere between a programme document and a statement of political intent.
