In July 2015, Emmanuel Macron was minister of the economy. No one, absolutely no one, had any idea that he would become the next president of the French Republic. “In our political framework, there’s one great figure missing – the king – which I believe the French would rather have kept”. These were Macron’s words, spoken in an interview with Le 1 Hebdo weekly.

The statement appears to have not made any waves at the time. But those words, examined again now that the young president has taken office, demonstrate Macron’s desire to become a forceful leader (aside from the smiles and good manners) with the backing of the ‘monarchic’ institutions of the Fifth Republic. They have taken on their proper meaning: Vive le Roi!
