Once “orphaned” of tata Madiba, or Nelson Mandela, South Africa might gain a tenacious mother figure to guide it: Mamphela Ramphele. Activist, doctor, anthropologist, academic, manager, she’s lived five lives rolled into one. Now it’s time for number 6: politics.

Mamphela Aletta Ramphele, aged 65, founded her party Agang (“Let’s build together”) in February, in order to challenge the African National Congress at the presidential elections of 2014. In 19 years, no one has every managed to defeat Nelson Mandela’s party. Highly critical of the current president, Jakob Zuma, Ramphele claims that tata Madiba’s legacy has been betrayed, and the country’s rampant corruption, combined with a lack of social justice, seems to prove her right.
