Hassan Rouhani’s many challenges

It was July 2013, shortly after Hassan Rouhani had been elected the new president of the Iranian Islamic Republic. In an op-ed in The New York Times, François Nicoullaud, then France’s ambassador in Iran, recounted it was Rouhani who convinced Iran’s conservative supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, to change his course of action and choose another path. Those were different times, Rouhani was largely unknown 12 years ago. Yet he was working behind the scenes. An agreement on nuclear power seemed impossible then.

But now it’s virtually a done deal. How did we reach this point? And, above all, in what direction is the Iranian president headed?
