Son of refugees, a Russian father and Estonian mother, he is an economist and politician born in Vienna in 1944.
On 22 May 2016 he was elected president of Austria, but the elections were cancelled due to irregularities in the vote count. In the next elections he will once again be up against the rival he defeated in May, the ultra-nationalist Norbert Hofer.
