The year 1989 saw the Tiananmen Square revolt, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the ouster and assassination of long-time Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, considered a friend of theWest during the Cold War. .The authorvisited Romania less than two months after his ouster and recalls the country’s more fragile times.
