The surveillance scandal is America’s moral Waterloo.
For more than two centuries the United States has been a planetary beacon for freedom, a dream of a better life and the place you could run to when all else was lost. The US, for all its flaws, showed the world that democracy worked, that letting a free people decide how it wanted to live made life better for everyone and that individual rights were not the recipe for anarchy their totalitarian foes claimed. This vision has been lost.
