Stately Zagreb was once a hallmark for Modernist architects. The legendary Viktor Kovacic emphasized the importance of individualism and the contemporary. The Zagreb School soon made the Croatian capital into a European masterwork. Nor did communism get in the way, though the city did grow grayer and more block-like. But major change is afoot. The carefully-organized city faces the trappings of globalization.Glass and steel structures are going up and new neighborhoods being born. Will ‘old’ Zagreb survive, and in what form?
