The thawing of relations between China and the United States in the ’70s and ’80s was a fundamental aspect of the new Chinese foreign policy, especially when viewed in conjunction with the essentially non-existent relations between China and the Soviet Union. Over the course of the last 25 years, since the dissolution of the USSR, relations between Beijing and Washington have clearly r e t a i n e d their priority status. But there have also been significant positive developments in the relationship between Beijing and Moscow as well as in the triangular relationship among China, Russia and Central Asia, especially since 1991.
