A growing market, a streamlined bureaucracy and a strong cultural and geographical affinity have made Albania highly desirable to Italians.
“Two Peoples, One Sea, One Friendship” was the title of an initiative launched by the Italian Embassy in Tirana to promote the friendship between Italy and Albania. And it is precisely with the sea that the story of Albanian immigration to Italy begins. It all started one August, a month when most Italians are on holiday, and the summer heat was so intense that it made headlines. On 9August 1991, however, the top story was not about the weather, but rather about the onset of a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented proportions in Italian history.
