Stakanov lives here no longer

Mrs. Teranishi holds up a relic for the camera. It’s her husband’s uniform. It isn’t laden with medals, even though he fought a daily war, which came to an end seventeen years ago, on Valentine’s Day, when Akira Teranishi committed suicide by jumping off a Toyko skyscraper. Like so many in these days of crisis.

The uniform is his ‘salary-man’ suit. There are thousands of them, all the same, just like the people who wore and continue to wear them, the foot soldiers of the crisis: salaried workers, deprived of their reason to live – namely their jobs – by the Japanese economic crisis.
