Sweden in Italy: among design, city planning and literature

Swedish culture keeps bringing events to Italy: on July 5th the author Jonas Hassen Khemiri will be at the 2017 Literature Festival. The writer emerged between 2003 and 2004, his novels were later represented in Norway, France, UK (and translated into many languages, including Italian). The ‘Festival of Literature’ in Rome, that kicked off on June 20th at the Basilica of Massenzio (in Via dei Fori Imperiali) continues until 21 July.

A few weeks ago, on June 5th, the scholars Henrik Boman (researcher at the Swedish Institute in Rome) and Luigi Franciosini (architecture professor, Roma Tre University) illustrated their research on the history of the Italian capital at the ‘Swedish Institute of Classical Studies’. The conference focused on the topic: Topographic Reconnections for the Central Archeological Area of Rome – A proposal for the International Competition 2016.

The debate (organized by the Institute and by the Chalmers School of Architecture in Gothenburg) analyzed the accessibility of the area between Piazza Venezia and the Colosseum Valley. Franciosini and the architects David Chipperfield, Franco Purini and Riccardo Petrachi examined the territory between the ‘Campidoglio’ and the ‘Fori Imperiali’. On Friday, May 26th, the ‘House of Architecture’ in Rome had hosted the conferenceThe Forest of Venice. Wood Construction for a Sustainable Future – a Italo-Swedish Dialogue.

The ‘House of Architecture’ in Rome, in collaboration with the Embassy of Sweden in Italy and with the Swedish Institute of Stockholm, introduced the exhibition, which was opened from May 26th to the 8th of June: at the inauguration Alf Karlsson (on behalf of the Swedish Ministry of Housing and Digital Development) and Livia Podestà (Media Relations Manager of the ‘Swedish Institute of Stockholm’) did speak about environmentally sustainable policies. The initiative took place in the context of the International Exhibition of Architecture of Venice 2016: “The Forest of Venice”, is an idea developed by architectural studies Kjellander Sjöberg and Folkhem, with the cooperation of the ‘Swedish Institute of Stockholm’.
