The China Investment Corporation is expanding its investment portfolio in every direction, revealing its international aspirations.

Ding Xuedong is head of the China Investment Corporation (CIC), the sovereign wealth fund created by Beijing in 2007. According to Chinese analysts, CIC will soon become the largest sovereign wealth fund in the world. Lou Jiwei, who is now China’s finance minister, vacated the position of chairman and CEO of CIC in 2013. This cleared the way for Ding, who was deputy finance minister at the time, to take the helm. The change in leadership from one high-profile manager to another symbolized a generational shift. “Lou has made some great changes in terms of the direction and investment allocation transformation during his tenure”, Winnie Deng, a Shanghai-based investment fund analyst, told Bloomberg at the time. “But it is up to the new head to actually realize returns from the shift in investment strategy”.
