The country was never united until the Italian colonial occupation. A short outline of the groups, militias, cities and leading figures involved.

The only prediction that everyone – politicians, analysts and even regular Libyan citizens – is prepared to make is that the Libyan crisis will last for a long time. The transition from 41 years of dictatorship under Muammar Gaddafi to a relatively peaceful new order is still far from over. The path will be a long one, and unfortunately for Libya, it is not even clear that the country is currently moving in the right direction.
